Any rune can get you over 12 in an attribute, as long as it's an attribute of your main class. Ie a Ranger/Monk can use a Rune of Beatmastery, Expertise, Marksmanship & Wilderness Survival. But they could not use a Rune of Healing, Protection or Smiting as these are not attributes of their main class.

The max you can get from attribute points is 12, and runes add 1 (minor), 2 (major) & 3 (superior) to an attribute. Thus if you have 12 and a minor rune, you'll get 13 in that attribute.

Note - only 1 rune will add to an attribute. thus if you have say a minor in scythe & a superior, you'll get +3 to Scythe, not +4 - since the higest effect will be counted.

To get runes:

- you can get them from armor drops from monster's. Monster's will sometimes drop armor drops which have runes attached to them (you'll know this as the armor salvage drop will be blue, purple or gold).

- visit a Rune merchant that you can find in most major towns (ascalon city, Lion's Arch, Kamadan, Kaining Center, Shing Jae Monestry, etc). just look for a npc with [Runes] next to their name.. you can buy runes from them (as well as sell runes to them as well).

Also note, if you get the headpiece with +1 Scythe, you can get a max of 16 in scythe (as mentioned).

12 from attribute points, +1 from headpiece, +3 from sup rune = 16.

This does also mean you can get 13 without needing any rune, as 12 +1 = 13

Look on the price check forum. There's a sticky about green values.

The question that comes to my mind is why you'd want 16 in Scythe Mastery.

First off, it takes a Superior rune to get it that high, which entails a -75 Health penalty. Now a Superior Vigor rune (adding +50H) would somewhat compensate that loss - you'd only be down -25H then, at a cost of ~12k gold for the rune. The relatively small increases in damage that the higher mastery level will give you needs to be weighed against that loss of Health.

Keep in mind that as a front-line melee fighter who, btw, has 10 less base AL (and a whopping 30 less AL vs physical) than a warrior, you want to have as much Health as possible when you charge into that melee.

Secondly, unless your skill bar is nothing but scythe attack skills, higher mastery level (higher than req9/max damage weapon) isn't really neccessary and takes away points that should be put into your other skills. Now, you have a little room to play here and can usually adjust your build accordingly (in case you get a really cool-looking req 12 scythe you just have to use).

My derv runs 14 Mysticism, 10 Earth and 10 Scythe (because I have a really cool req 10 Nightmare scythe). With a minor Vigor and a +30H weapon, he has 575 health; a Sup vigor would bump that up to 595.

Now, I could drop the Mysticism down to 12 and bump the Scythe to 12 and, throwing on a Sup Scythe, could bump that up to 16 (dropping my health to 500).

But I only have 1 Scythe skill on my bar so, aside from possibly a slightly better chance to land a critical hit, the higher mastery benefit wouldn't outwiegh the disadvantage for me.

Fortunately, most sup weapon runes are dirt cheap (100g) compared to the comparable minors so feel free to try one out and see if it works for you; if it doesn't, you can always reapply a minor over it. The reason the sups are cheap is because no one wants/uses them - that should be a tip-off to you to their usefulness.

I was thinking the same thing. I think superior runes are bad news for everyone, even monks. Sure every +1 helps, but it doesn't make THAT big of a difference to go from 14 to 15 or 15 to 16.

Also, I agree about the weapon. -10 armor while attacking is unacceptable for a front line character. You should not use this stat for your derv. You can get a similar (and better) rune that is +15 damage/-5 energy. That would make more sense. Or you could get what most people get +15% damage while health is over 50%.

Since dervs are also enchanted 99% of the time they can use a 15% damage while enchanted inscription pretty well.
